Friday Night Board Games – Power Grid

Power GridWe took a break this week from our normal game of Agricola, which has been the game of choice for the last little while. Kyle, instead, bought and brought over Power Grid; a game that he has been looking to get for a while.  I’m always up for trying a new game, and it took little to convince Rhonda to play.

For the first time, I think things went really well. Slow at first, but overall I think everyone enjoyed it. With set up and going through the rules for the first time it took about an hour. I think that in the future that will certainly go down. Actual game play was about an hour, maybe an hour and a half.  Rhonda ended up winning the game which was funny because she kept saying “I don’t see the strategy in this game!” (Side Note: Do not play poker with my wife ).  I think that I need to re-think my initial strategy, I took the slow approach and got my power plants full before I started buying cities. I think I need a better balance between cities and power plants.

I’m looking forward to playing it again, with more people too. This was our first attempt at an auction style board game. I rather liked it. It would be a good starter game to play once or twice before moving on to a game like Agricola or Battlestar Galactica.

P.S. I plan on doing a review of all of the board games (well perhaps all of the games) that I play. I’m still trying to come up with a good hook that will make you guys want to come back and read/watch? more. Any suggestions?
